UPA celebrates new community garden

On July 12, Summa Health System and University Park Alliance led the kick-off celebration of the new community garden on Adolph across the University Park YMCA.

Members of the Links and Perkins community joined in the celebration, eating from a nicely presented buffet.

The supporters of the garden hope that it brings some community involvement and collaboration. Additionally, working the garden and learning about its bounty will hopefully educate the nearby residents on the benefits of a healthy diet.

Residents interested in working a plot of the garden are encouraged to fill out an application, which can be found here.

St. Sebastian

Saint Sebastian's intends to use its newly planted gardens as an education tool.

The gardens sit on a beautifully large plot of land just outside the school on the west side of Hawkins.

Children helped plant the seedlings, and students will be able to see and work with the bounty when school starts back up.

It's a diverse mix of veggies and herbs, including pumpkins, beets, tomatoes and rosemary.

Mason Community Learning Center Community Garden

It's the first day of summer, and the community of Mason decided to spend it planting a garden. Tiny versions of cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and other healthy yummies found homes thanks to a committed neighborhood enthusiasm.

Nearby residents tilled soil, watered plants, dug holes, and simply enjoyed every moment. Young and old alike worked together in building a healthy future for themselves.

NEOhaus spearheaded the Mason Community Garden and Keep Akron Beautiful assisted with some supplies. Collaboration will continue as University Park Alliance looks forward to teaming up with NEOhaus in the future for more community garden fun.
